Community Gardens

The NHCA community gardens are dedicated to bringing together neighbours to provide locally grown food for their families, the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and other interested groups.  The garden promotes community, organic growing methods and a sense of shared responsibility and team work.

Registration:

  • Begins March 13, 2024 at 9:00am for new gardeners.

Rental Costs:

  • 4 x 12 – $50
  • 4 x 8  – $40
  • Maximum purchase of 2 garden plots total.
  • Returning gardeners – $5 off their first garden plot at pre-registration.
  • All garden plot rentals require an NHCA membership, valid until Oct 31st.
  • All community garden plot rentals are valid for one growing season, from May 1st through October 31st of the year of purchase.

Volunteer Requirement:

Each gardener is required to volunteer and complete the required number of duty shifts (2 per garden bed)  – but you’re welcomed and encouraged to do more!

We are specifically looking for volunteers willing to take on more of a leadership role in the gardens, either with communication, maintenance, or mentoring!

If you do not sign up for volunteer shifts they will be assigned for you.

Community Gardens Initiatives

Tackling Food Poverty

Each garden has several plots set aside for growing fresh food for the Calgary Food Bank. Hundreds of pounds of fresh produce are donated from each garden every fall.

There are also specially labeled “Community Bed” plots, where gardeners grow strawberries, carrots, or other produce. Please don’t pick until the fruit/veg is ready and remember that this is a shared resource for all residents in the community.

Sponsorship

Gardening season 2021 is well under way! Our beds are planted, and our volunteers are working hard to make the gardens a peaceful and productive green space. This year we have several amazing sponsors that have contributed a total of over $2000 worth of products to help get our gardens up and running, including tools, weed-wackers, locks, flowers, paint, and cleaning supplies:

Country Hills Home Depot

Country Hills Canadian Tire

North Calgary Decorating – Benjamin Moore

Sarcee Trail Costco

We thank these sponsors so much for their generosity!

We have also completed several large projects with the help of our amazing volunteer teams at both Coventry Garden and Harvest Hills Garden. Notably, Coventry Garden has a new perimeter fence and upgraded composting system, and Harvest Hills Garden shed has a brand new coat of pretty paint and new shingles. Keep an eye out for more projects coming over the summer!
