This is the one I know the most about, as I am the main volunteer for this location.  Ice is 90% ready for use, still a bit bumpy but getting better with more and more floods.  We applied and received a city of Calgary fire pit for this location too, which I am told will be there year-round.  Rules are posted on a nearby sign, and anyone using it is asked to be please be respectful of the community and take their trash home with them.  Benches on this site have been kindly built and donated by a volunteer, people are asked to please be respectful again and not damage these.

New this year!  A resident in the nearby homes successfully applied for a second location to be added from the city, and he is making great progress getting the ice going despite a late start.  Should be in top form very soon!

(December 2021)

With the cold weather getting more frequent, many will be hoping to get outdoors for a skate soon, one of the few covid friendly physical activities we can do these days, provided people maintain distance from others not in their cohorts.

Blaize, Larry and I have been getting started on the process. Boards are up at panorama hills site, a few layers of ice are done but many more to go. Harvest has been flooded a couple of times as well. Depending on weather, hopefully we will have something usable in a couple of weeks. The process does work best if the ice is built in small layers, so it’s time consuming.

I would just ask residents to use their discretion as to whether the ice is ready or not. If it’s cracking a lot under foot, probably not ready, and breaking it up too much just delays the process of getting to nice smooth ice. If it seems solid and smooth, not giving way to pressure, feel free to start using it. Just remember to stay at least 2m apart from others who are not in your cohort, and of course stay home if you have any covid symptoms listed by Alberta Health.

Coventry Link Update

  • The winter water supply is now working!
  • The rink boards & liner kit should be with us in January.
  • If anyone else wants to to flood the rink, please email creatingcoventry@gmail.com with your name & contact info

You have two FREE outdoor rinks that are run by hard working and winter driven volunteers! One is in Harvest Hills and another is in Panorama Hills.

Without the team of wonderful volunteers, who build both ice rinks from scratch and maintain them throughout the season by shovelling the snow, it simply would not be possible to provide these rinks to the Northern Hills residents.

Want to build something for your community?

If you love winter and don’t mind to get a bit cold, we would love to have you on the team! We can always use more rink volunteers (for example to help clear snow from the ice, help maintain the surface, or re-flood after Chinooks) so if you would be interested, please contact Daniel Sennhauser.

Please enjoy responsibly:

  • Please dress appropriately – it can get colder than you might think out there on the rink!
  • These rinks are not boarded and therefore not suitable for hockey.
  • Please be courteous to the neighbours who live around the rinks – don’t block their driveways if parking at the rink; please don’t play hockey as loose pucks can damage their fence/property.
  • If you see a volunteer clearing the ice, please wave or say hi and thank you! It is only due to these dedicated community volunteers (your neighbours) that we can provide these rinks for everyone.
  • Beware of “bumpy bits”! Outdoor ice surfaces can get a bit rough sometimes – we don’t have or use a Zamboni…
  • Most of all, please just have fun!

Community Rink Locations:

Harvest Hills pleasure rink is located at the south end of Harvest Hills Lake, at the west end of Harvest Lake Dr, near the NHCA community gardens.

Panorama Hills pleasure rink is located in the green space at Panamount Square, off Panamount Blvd NW (opposite St.Jerome’s school, to the NW).
